The latest example of a large scale open source implementation has come from the London 2012 Olympics. The official website of London Olympics will be hosted end-to-end on an open source platform!
This win for the use of Open Source has not come easy. Creating a website on an Open Source platform capable of supporting the Olympics had its own share of challenges, especially when it came to dealing with “peak performance”. Yet, the designers of the website were able to overcome the difficulties. One distinguishing characteristic of the London 2012 Olympics website is that the primary Open Source software platform (LAMP) has been extensively leveraged, and is able to serve with great performance and scalability.
